New fuel rules could add to cruise costs - New Brunswick - CBC  News.

So basically this means that some cruise rates may go up, but really this is good news in the long run and for the environment ... it's about time to add some more accountability for the types of fuel cruise.

There are tons of rules that ships already have to follow to comply with environmental safety policies, and we go to painstaking lengths to drill it into crew and guests.  On the Infinity, my last ship, we were the Environmental Ship of the Year for the past several years, and they had a contest for crew to create something out of entirely recycled materials - it was pretty cool what some crew members made, actually, now I wish I had taken pictures!

So if you go on a cruise, please listen to the announcements during Boat Drill when the Cruise Director asks you to use safe practices and make environmentally sound decisions ... like not throwing paper or cigarettes overboard!  Security will find out and if it is deemed intentional, you will be fined LOTS of money.  If ships are found to be breaking environmental policies, they get fined astronomical amounts of money - as they should be.  (For instance, certain ports require us to be 40 nautical miles away from land before we release ballast water into the ocean.)
Explosion injures 12 cruise ship passengers - Travel - News - msnbc.com.

This article shows a picture of the actual explosion and the proximity to the ship - just goes to show you, crazy things happen that can be totally out of control.  You should be proud of how most crew members handle emergencies, I bet they were so prepared and reacted so quickly to this.

My friend who works on this ship was helping the passengers back onboard, and went back to her cabin to take a nap.  As soon as she got there, the explosion
happened.  All sorts of announcements from the bridge came on, lots of running footsteps... makes it pretty hard to take a nap!  Thank goodness this happened
when the passengers were back on board!
